Sodium Hydroxide High Test Food Grade Lye – 2 lb is a strong alkaline material used in compatible soap making, pH adjustment, chemical processing, laboratory work, and other controlled technical applications. Also known as caustic soda or NaOH, sodium hydroxide requires careful measuring, storage, and handling.
For soap making, lye participates in the saponification reaction with fats and oils. The correct amount depends on the specific oils, batch size, purity, desired superfat, and formulation. Use an established soap formula or appropriate lye calculation rather than estimating quantities. It can also be used for compatible pH-adjustment work where sodium hydroxide is the specified reagent.
Sodium hydroxide is highly corrosive and can cause severe burns. Wear appropriate chemical-resistant gloves, eye and face protection, and protective clothing. Dissolving NaOH in water releases substantial heat. Add lye carefully to the measured water according to established safe procedures; never pour water onto a concentrated mass of dry lye.
Keep the product dry and tightly sealed because sodium hydroxide readily absorbs moisture from the air. Store away from acids and other incompatible materials. Review the label and safety data sheet for detailed handling, storage, first-aid, spill, and disposal information. Food-grade designation does not mean the dry product is safe to consume directly.
High Test Food Grade Lye – 2 lb provides sodium hydroxide for informed users working with compatible processes. Browse related soap-making and technical materials in our Solvents and Liquid Carriers collection.
